RESEARCH
Research at
HHS is a critical inquiry into legal social economic construct of
gender and its impact on women’s rights on an ongoing basis. One of
the areas of critical concern for HHS has been violence against women.
Our research/studies so far include:
Domestic Violence: Patterns and Trends
of Domestic Violence- a study of organisational data in
Bangalore, India. Year: 1998-99 This
study was conducted as a part of a series of studies, sponsored by
the ICRW across India on the issue of Domestic violence. For the
purposes of this study domestic violence was defined as ‘violence
perpetrated in the marital home and/or by husband or intimate
partners'.
Objectives
of the study:

Assess and
analyze the patterns that emerge from the records of the
organizations based in Karnataka that serve the needs of women who
are experiencing domestic violence, and the capacity of these
organizations to support the realization of women’s human
rights.

Determine
what can be learned about domestic violence from secondary
data.

Sexual
harassment at the workplace: perception of workers and prevalence of
sexual harassment in different work sectors in Bangalore city. 1999
-
The body
project: a study that attempts to understand how women relate to and
construct their bodies vis-a-vis labour, sexuality and
reproduction.

Gendering
the Juvenile Justice system:
a study with Centre for Child and Law at the National Law School
University. Understanding how gender manifests itself within the
Juvenile Justice system and how it impacts on girls; this
micro-level study is nevertheless representative of the realities
and experiences of girls currently contained
within the system.
DOCUMENTATION
Documentation
at HHS brings together all the insights and materials that we have
generated in the ten years of engagement with issues concerning
women’s rights through our various activities. The collection has a
strong practical focus, and includes campaign resources, training
resources, academic resources and a range of audio and audiovisual
materials. Materials are available for purchase from HHS, and some
materials are available free on request. Our documentation includes:

A
resource centre comprising over 1700 resources - the centre is open for reference and the catalogue will
soon be accessible online. There are a wide range of publications
and resources on feminist theories, gender and law, gender and
development, globalization, violence against women, and many other
such gender issues.

Analysis,
simplification and transliteration of basic concepts of equality,
democracy, gender rights, sexuality, legal concepts, training
materials, information on important international covenants (CEDAW,
UDHR) charts, primers and brochures that talk about women’s
rights.

Primers
on democracy, equality and women and law – Rs. 30 each.

Brochures
include ‘Sexual harassment at the workplace’, ‘Do’s and
don’ts for Sexual harassment complaints committees’, and
‘Violence free life’ both in Kannada and English which talks
about sexual harassment of women in public spaces
