Hengasara Hakkina Sangha (HHS), translates from Kannada to English to mean ‘women’s rights organization’. We are a feminist, activist women’s rights resource center based in Bangalore, India and see ourselves as part of the larger women’s movement in India.

We began in 1993 with a belief that equipping women with the knowledge and use of law would lead to enhanced assertion of their rights.  We began with training on rights and law for poor rural women and NGO activists working with them in Karnataka. Today, besides using training as methodology we work with grassroots NGOs, state institutions, media, civil society organizations, professional organizations, students and trade unions to promote women’s rights through research, documentation and communication.

Mainstreaming Women's Rights
Through our Communication Cell we have been mainstreaming women’s rights through organizing public meetings, debates and discussions; publishing articles in leading newspapers; radio plays; music concerts; dance performances and theatre. This has served to generate public opinion on issues that effect women’s lives.

Research and Documentation
Research and documentation at HHS has generated a wide range of materials on women’s rights in Kannada and English. These materials in the form of analysis, simplification and transliteration of legal concepts, translation of important international covenants, training materials, primers on concepts like equality, democracy, gender rights, sexuality, and brochures that talk about women’s rights are available to organizations, activists, women and the public. Research has been conducted on domestic violence, Sexual Harassment at the workplace and womens' experiences of their bodies.

In the course of our work in all the districts of Karnataka, we meet women who have exemplarily spirit, zest for life, courage, creativity and wisdom in the face of adverse and difficult situations. This continues to be a source of inspiration. Furthering women’s rights has also meant celebrating their wisdom, creativity and love for life. All our programmes and projects flow from this core.

Our objectives:

  • Enable women to be aware of their lives and experiences, aspirations, demands and violations within a rights framework.

  • Challenge and transform exploitative, oppressive and discriminatory power structures, systems, attitudes, practices and belief systems towards a just and equal society.

  • Enable all women to control and transform their lives.

  • Celebrating and affirming women’s wisdom, creativity and contributions to society.
